A new Workvivo study has shown that the majority of HR professionals are now struggling with burnout and chronic fatigue at work.

After helping people in their organisations to get through the pandemic and initial Great Resignation, burnout is beginning to take hold.

88% of HR professionals have dreaded work in the past six months

HR professionals are the gatekeepers of our culture. They are the bridge between employer and employee.

Our recent study showed that 88% of HR professionals dreaded work in the past six months, telling us that our superhuman HR professionals are only human after all.

78% of HR professionals are open to leaving their jobs

The Great Resignation has now begun to permeate all levels of organizations, including those in HR.

After a difficult two years, it’s time to ask ourselves: who is looking after the HR people?

How did we get here?
The 100-Year History of HR

It’s hard to imagine a time where HR simply ceased to exist, given the fundamental role HR professionals have played in helping their organizations navigate the pandemic.

The Industrial Revolution, beginning in the late 18th century, marked the real advent of the employer-employee relationship, as labor moved from the agricultural (farmers) to the industrial (factories with large workforces).

Working conditions were poor and fed up workers moved to a direct (and sometimes violent) form of protest. Many employers stubbornly resisted calls for improved labor conditions, but something needed to change.

Some companies began looking for ways to improve relations with their employees, setting the initial wheels of HR in motion. This was accelerated by World War I as labor demand exploded.

From that moment on, HR has been woven into the fabric of nearly every major event and successful company in history.

The Great Resignation

Great Resignation now affecting HR roles

97% of HR professionals have felt emotionally fatigued from work over the past year

The decline in workplace cultures with the onset of the pandemic and subsequent Great Resignation led to more work for HR professionals, more stress, more resignations, harder recruitment.

They carried the water for every organisation.

Now, they are experiencing chronic fatigue and considering leaving their jobs.

of HR professionals on corporate boards.

Employee experience is more than a buzzword – it could be the most important factor in your company’s success

Companies that take their people for granted will suffer an uninspiring workplace experience

If you work at a company that doesn’t value your wellbeing, your risk of depression increases by 300%.

A study by MIT Sloan showed ‘toxic corporate culture’ as the top predictor for employee turnover.

It’s never been more important to create a company culture where you get the best out of your people by amplifying the emotional connection they have to the business.

How Workvivo Helped Stanford Navigate the New World of Work

“I would certainly highly recommend Workvivo. We’re going to be in partnership for a long time, so I’m very happy.”

- Carmen Allison, CHRO @ Hoover (Stanford)

The Problem

The Hoover Institution is a non-profit think tank within Stanford University. Prior to the pandemic, it was a traditional organization with little need for remote work.

They needed a tool that would not only allow its employees to work effectively and productively from home, but also help them to hold on to the organization’s culture and personality.

The Solution

The Hoover team put together an RFP for a workplace solution and sent it to 20 companies that were considered to be the best in the business, but there was one clear winner.

In 2020, the Hoover Institution launched HooverHub, its own fully branded Workvivo environment.

The Simplicity
of Onboarding Workvivo

Carmen and her colleagues were happy with how organically Workvivo grew within their institution:

“We just let HooverHub (Workvivo) have a grassroots kind of feel to it. We had some structure of what we wanted to do with department pages and info, but the community aspect is really (organic).”

Organic Adoption
of Workvivo

“We wanted to put our personality on it. We didn’t want to make a thousand decisions like you have to make on a custom home. We’re not experts on any of this, and wanted a product like Workvivo. I hate to say a plug and play, but it was pretty iPhone easy (to set up).”

Carmen Allison (CHRO @ Hoover Institution at Stanford)

Success

“It’s very heartwarming to see people passionate and being able to share their passion at work.”

- Carmen Allison, CHRO @ Hoover (Stanford)
