Ever wondered what the most communicated topics are across internal channels? Caitlin Kirwan dives into the data to find out.

Whatever the organization type, industry or size, the same key themes tend to crop up time and time again across internal communication channels. And, if you’re anything like me, you’ll love being a bit nosey and peeking under the bonnet of other organizations’ internal content plans.

Beyond curiosity, it can also be super helpful to keep an eye on these topics to make sure you’re not missing anything important in your own IC strategy.

So what are the most communicated topics, and why do they consistently get the most air time? Grab yourself a cuppa, and let’s dive in!

The 4 most communicated topics

I’ve trawled through the last three years worth of reports from Gallagher’s State of the Sector survey, each of which compiles insights from thousands of internal comms and HR professionals around the world. The 2025 report, 2024 report and 2023 report each share responses and feedback that internal communicators shared at the end of the previous year.

According to the data, the topics most commonly communicated within organizations over the last three years have been:

  • Strategy, vision and purpose
  • Organizational change
  • Values and culture
  • Wellbeing and mental health

Let's explore each of these themes and consider why they’ve been occurring so frequently across IC channels.

1. Strategy, vision and purpose

The topic sitting at the top of the list for 2022, 2023 and 2024 is ‘strategy, vision and purpose’.

It consistently remains the most communicated topic year after year, which perhaps doesn’t come as much of a surprise when we consider that 70% of internal communication professionals say they hold responsibility for ‘strategy awareness’ in their organizations.

We know that strategic alignment is a core enabler of employee engagement, and that teams need to understand their company’s ‘bigger picture’ to feel genuine purpose in their roles.

It’s up to us to help connect the dots and show how employees’ daily work contributes to the organization’s goals and ambitions. By prioritizing communication activities and content that focuses on strategy, vision and purpose, our messaging can have a truly positive impact on the business.

2. Organizational change

‘Organizational change’ swooped in as a new entry for internal communicators in 2023, debuting as the second most communicated topic for the entire year, and remained in the top three in 2024.

Whether it’s a workforce reorganization program, a migration to a new employee experience platform (EXP), or the launch of a new corporate strategy, organizational change is inevitable. It’s the new constant, and Gartner reports that typical organizations have rolled out five “major firm-wide changes” in the last three years.

Direct links have been found between how effectively a change initiative is communicated and how well it’s adopted by employees. One study even found that 75% of change initiatives will fail because of poor communication.

The power is certainly in our hands, so it’s no surprise that organizational change has become one of the most communicated topics in recent years. Whatever the change program, we can support the organization by communicating transparently, taking a strategic approach, focusing on integration, and creating space for employee feedback.

Read more about these four steps in one of my previous blog posts, ‘Managing Workplace Change: How To Keep Employees Engaged’.

3. Values, culture and belonging

Ranking as the second-most communicated topic in 2024, the fourth in 2023 and the third in 2022, is ‘values and culture’.

When asked about the purpose of IC within their organization in 2025, internal communicators placed culture and belonging – “fostering an inclusive culture where employees feel valued” – in second place, behind only ‘strategic alignment’. So it makes total sense that ‘values and culture’ would be one of the most communicated topics, year-on-year.

This is a pretty broad topic that could include everything from recognition and company values to inclusion and diversity. It’s perhaps everything that contributes to the way we do things around here. The cultural norms, behaviors and standards that make the workplace what it is.

But communicating values and culture is certainly not straightforward. Although it’s one of the ‘most communicated topics’, getting it right is as much about how we communicate as what we communicate.

This blog post sets out three practical ways that you can share and amplify company culture – by aligning content, aligning your communication approach, and facilitating transparent communication between leaders and employees.

4. Wellbeing and mental health

Finally, there’s been a relatively high volume of comms relating to ‘wellbeing and mental health’ within organizations over the last three years.

Interestingly, the topic was ranked as one of the top three-most communicated topics in 2022, but then dropped significantly in 2023 as only the ninth-most communicated topic. In 2024, ‘wellbeing and mental health’ rose back up the list as the fifth-most communicated topic, with 31% of internal communicators saying they had shared a high volume of wellbeing-related comms throughout the year.

While different awareness days and annual campaigns might be more ‘trendy’ every year, messaging that encourages and supports employee health and wellbeing at a holistic level is incredibly important. Employers in many countries have a legal responsibility to protect and support the physical and mental health of their employees.

And, aside from that, it’s simply the right thing to do.

As internal communicators, we play a key role in proactively supporting employee wellbeing and mental health by amplifying the resources available (such as EAP services, wellbeing-related benefits and training opportunities), and cultivating a culture where open and honest conversations about mental health and wellbeing are normalized.

What themes will take center stage for the rest of 2025 and beyond?

With that concluding our look back at the most communicated topics over the last few years, let’s switch things up and take a quick look forward at the themes that will take center stage over the coming months and years.

I predict strategy, vision and purpose to remain as one of the most communicated topics and key priorities for internal communicators for the foreseeable future. As we explored earlier, employees need to understand the ‘why’ and feel connected to the bigger picture to feel motivated at work. Feeling a sense of purpose in your day-to-day work is absolutely critical, so we need to continue communicating messaging that emphasizes the organization’s strategic direction and purpose.

I also believe that change communications will remain a top priority and therefore one of the most communicated topics for IC professionals in the months and years to come. Workplace change programs are never going to just stop – organizations need to be constantly evolving and changing to keep up with the market and remain competitive. Things like return-to-office messaging, digital transformation programs and the continual rise of AI will make effective change communication even more vital in the near future.

While there will be plenty of other topics keeping internal communicators on their toes for the rest of the year, both data and anecdotal feedback highlight that these two themes will continue to feature heavily across our IC channels.
